Into the Verdon region
Arrive early enough to reach reception before closing and enjoy a relaxed afternoon in Castellane.
This lively little town sits at the eastern entrance to the gorge, overlooked by the striking cliff topped with the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Roc. Narrow lanes, cafés on the central square, and a lovely place to get your first taste of Provence.
A family-run site on the edge of Castellane, within walking distance of the centre and right on the Verdon river. Leave the motorhome here and explore the town on foot.

A day of rest by the river
A deliberate rest day with short distances to cover. Use the time to settle in and have your first swim.
A roughly 30-minute climb up the cliff above town rewards you with sweeping views over the Verdon valley and the red rooftops of Castellane. A lovely way to stretch your legs after the driving days.
The turquoise reservoir north of Castellane invites you in for your first swim. Calm shores, sunny spots and clear water make it a great place for a relaxed afternoon by the water.
The famous panoramic loop
IMPORTANT: avoid the Route des Crêtes (the D23 loop via La Palud-sur-Verdon) with your 7-metre motorhome. It's narrow, partly one-way, and unsuitable for long vehicles.
Recommendation: leave the motorhome at the campsite and drive the panoramic route in a small hire car, or head only to the easily accessible Point Sublime.
The northern rim of the gorge (Rive Droite, D952) is easier to drive with a motorhome than the southern Corniche Sublime, though it's still narrow in places. Take it slowly and make use of passing places.
This spectacular panoramic road, with its viewpoints high above the gorge, is in places very narrow, winding and partly one-way. It's not recommended for a 7-metre motorhome, and at some viewpoints large vehicles are even banned from passing through.
One of the most stunning viewpoints of the gorge, looking straight down into the Verdon. A short walk leads to the actual belvedere, ideal for a few quiet moments above the canyon.
To the turquoise water
The car park at Pont du Galetas fills up early in high summer. Arrive in the morning or late afternoon.
In Aiguines, park the motorhome at the lower edge of the village and walk the short climb up, as the lanes are narrow.
This small hilltop village, crowned by its château, overlooks the Lac de Sainte-Croix and offers one of the finest views over the lake and the mouth of the gorge. The lanes are narrow, so park the motorhome at the edge of the village and walk up.
At Pont du Galetas, the Verdon Gorge flows into the lake, and it's here that the water glows its most intense turquoise. From the pebble beaches, you can hire pedal boats or canoes and paddle into the gorge.
A peaceful site above the lake near Aiguines, with green views all around and a great base for swimming and walking. From here you can easily reach the lakeshores and Moustiers by car.

Water and relaxation
A pure day of rest, in and by the water, just as you'd hoped for.
Bring sun protection and water shoes, as the pebble beaches can get very hot.
This large turquoise reservoir is the heart of your trip, with wide pebble beaches near Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon and Bauduen. Swim, try stand-up paddleboarding, or simply soak up the sun, this is where you get to take the time you've been promised.
This picturesque village sits right on the western shore of the lake, its houses almost reaching down to the water. A great spot for an ice cream or a late lunch by the lakeside.
Craftsmanship and faience
Moustiers cannot be driven into with a 7-metre motorhome. Use the car parks on the outskirts and continue on foot.
The climb up to the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir takes around 30 minutes and is well worth it for the view.
One of the most beautiful villages in France, picturesquely built into a cleft in the rock, with a golden star hanging from a chain high above. Famous for its faience pottery, with narrow lanes, small workshops and the Notre-Dame-de-Beauvoir church perched high above the village.
A lovingly curated little museum right in the heart of Moustiers, showing a surprisingly charming collection all about sweets and confectionery. A pleasant, quick stop off the beaten track.

Prehistory and a quiet lake
A calmer day in the less touristy part of the gorge. Combine a morning swim with the museum in the afternoon.
This calm, deep-blue lake in the Basses Gorges du Verdon sees far fewer crowds than the bigger lakes further upstream. A peaceful place to swim, paddle and unwind.
This modern museum in Quinson, designed by Norman Foster, tells the fascinating story of the gorge's Stone Age settlement. A great change of pace from water and walking, and easy to reach with a motorhome.

Heading home, leg 1
The return journey is deliberately split over two days, so you stay under five hours' driving time.
Use the motorway service stations for breaks, and fill up cheaply in France before the border.
