The Big Blossom Day
Keukenhof takes up half a day to a full day; allow time for breaks and ice cream.
If the Bloemencorso Bollenstreek flower parade happens to fall on your travel weekend, it's a highlight along the route between Noordwijk and Haarlem.
The world's most famous spring garden displays millions of tulips, daffodils and hyacinths in bloom during April. Alongside the flower displays in the pavilions, there are playgrounds, a maze and pedal boats, so the day stays entertaining even for twelve-year-olds.

The colourful stripes of the bulb fields stretch out right around Keukenhof. A signposted flower route by car or hire bike takes you past the most beautiful fields; stop in the parking bays and walk a short way, but don't step onto the fields themselves.
Engineering and a Historic Old Town
Today you'll change your base from Haarlem to Leiden, with short drives throughout.
Park in Leiden in one of the designated car parks on the edge of the old town, as the city centre is largely car-free.
This enormous steam pumping station helped drain the Haarlemmermeer in the 19th century. The huge beam engines and interactive exhibits vividly explain how the Netherlands reclaimed land from the water, an exciting stop especially for technically minded children.
Leiden delights with picturesque canals, old university buildings and the Molen de Valk windmill. As you wander through the lanes, you'll spot wall poems on the house façades, and a canal boat offers a relaxed view of the city.

The City Day
The car isn't worth the hassle in Amsterdam: parking charges are very high and the city centre is narrow and cramped. The P+R saves both nerves and money.
Don't plan too many activities, one or two museums plus a canal cruise is plenty for a relaxed day.
Ring canals, narrow gabled houses and lively squares make Amsterdam the perfect contrast to the countryside. A canal cruise gives you a good overview, and museums such as the Rijksmuseum or the Anne Frank House can be visited with advance booking.

An affordable park-and-ride car park on the edge of the city. From here, the train takes you into the centre stress-free, so you can leave the car behind.
Cheese Town and Windmills
Today you'll move your base to Gouda, with all drives staying under an hour.
At Kinderdijk, it's worth walking a stretch along the dyke to see the mills from different angles.
The cheese town of Gouda impresses with its magnificent Gothic town hall on the market square and the historic Weighing House. Try the famous cheese right at the stalls, and take a look inside the Sint-Janskerk with its huge stained-glass windows.

Windmill Village on the Zaan
Today you'll move towards the east, splitting the return journey to Bremen into two comfortable legs.
Zaanse Schans is quietest in the morning; later on, plenty of coach groups arrive.
A lively open-air village with working windmills, green wooden houses and craft workshops along the River Zaan. You can watch a mill grinding colour pigments or mustard, and visit a clog-making workshop and a cheese farm.

Journey Home
The journey home, with around 3.5 hours of pure driving time, is split by an interim stop.
Start off gently after breakfast, and you'll be comfortably back in Bremen by the afternoon.
Just past the German border, Lingen offers a lovely market square for a lunch break. A peaceful stop to break up the final leg of the journey home.
Arrival back at your starting point. This brings your round trip through the bulb region and the Green Heart to an end.
