A gentle start on the Bavarian Sea

This is where your trip begins. Before setting off, it's worth taking one last look at tyre pressure, nose weight and the hitch connection.
The campsite sits on a peninsula with its own lake access and sweeping views across the Chiemsee to the Chiemgau Alps. A calm start with a short first leg, a bathing meadow and a boat landing almost on your doorstep.

A castle on the island
A second night at the same site: no moving on, no manoeuvring. Time for the lake in the afternoon.
Ludwig II built his Bavarian Versailles here, right in the middle of an island. The crossing with the Chiemsee-Schifffahrt is part of the experience, followed by a walk through opulent mirror galleries and sprawling grounds. Leave the caravan at the campsite and drive only with the car to the landing stage.
Into the Salzkammergut
A short leg, leaving the afternoon and evening free at the lake.
Don't forget the Austrian vignette: your tow vehicle needs the car vignette, but the caravan doesn't need one of its own.
A small, peaceful site right on the crystal-clear Fuschlsee, with views of the surrounding mountains. The lake has drinking-water quality and is ideal for swimming and stand-up paddling. The approach via the B158 is very caravan-friendly, with no extreme gradients.

Fortress and old town
Third night at Fuschlsee: the caravan stays put, you travel light.
The Tempo-100 sticker won't help you today, but it will again tomorrow on the motorway.
One of Europe's largest fully preserved castles towers over Salzburg's old town. Take the funicular up, and at the top enjoy views over the city as far as the Alps, plus the Prince's Chambers and museums. Leave the caravan at Fuschlsee and drive into the centre with just the car, parking on the outskirts.

A ground-level park-and-ride site with no height restriction, ideal for avoiding multi-storey car parks in the city centre. From here, the trolleybus takes you comfortably into the old town. Completely straightforward with the car without the caravan.
Mountains and quiet
Around two hours' drive, easily manageable within the daily limit.
No steep passes: the route deliberately runs along wide main roads.
A peaceful site below the Hochkönig massif with sweeping views over the Steinernes Meer. A starting point for hikes and for long family-friendly trails without exposed sections. The approach via the B311 and local roads is very manageable with the caravan.

Nature and hiking
A rest day with no change of location. Choose your altitude and route according to mood and fitness.
Family-friendly hiking trails with panoramic views of the Hochkönig and Steinernes Meer, either gentle or a bit more demanding. Clear mountain streams and alpine meadows invite you to pause. The caravan stays at the site, and you set off straight from there.
Water and mountains
Instead of the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, you stay here in the valley by the lake. From Zell, you'll see the Tauern mountains in all their glory, without having to struggle up steep bends with your trailer.
Anyone keen to experience the Grossglockner can do a day trip from here without the caravan, though even then it's long, steep ramps by car.
A site with direct lake access and superb views across the Zeller See to the Hohe Tauern. Ideal for swimming, pedal boats and lakeside walks. The approach stays close to the valley floor and is caravan-friendly, with no pass roads required.

Water up close
The caravan stays put in Zell am See while you drive light into the Oberpinzgau and back.
Pack sturdy shoes and a rain jacket for the spray.
With a drop of 380 metres, the Krimml Waterfalls rank among the highest in Europe. The well-built waterfall trail winds up in switchbacks past several viewing platforms, with cooling spray on hot days. Drive there with just the tow vehicle and park at the ground-level waterfall car park.
Castles, salt and emerald-green water
Just over two hours' drive, well within the daily limit.
There's still time in the afternoon for a boat trip on the Königssee or a walk along the shore.
A peaceful site with views of the Watzmann and the surrounding mountains, just a few minutes' walk from the Königssee landing stage. The emerald-green lake with its electric boats to St. Bartholomä is a highlight to round off the trip. The approach via Berchtesgaden is very manageable with the caravan.

Salzbergwerk and the journey home
The final leg is under two and a half hours, comfortably within the daily limit including breaks.
Check tyre pressure and nose weight before the long motorway drive.
The mine train takes you deep into the mountain, past miners' slides and with a boat trip across the underground salt lake. An entertaining tour through salt and history, perfect before heading home. A short stop with the caravan still attached is possible, and a dedicated motorhome and trailer car park is available.
