The white opera house by the water can be climbed via its slanted marble roofs, offering sweeping views over the Oslofjord and the city from the top. The walk up is free and open to everyone. Guided tours run regularly inside.
The sprawling Frognerpark is home to Gustav Vigeland's famous sculptures, including the Monolith and the bridge lined with bronze figures. A lovely spot for a stroll and a breather. Admission is free.
One of Europe's most beautiful railway lines
A highlight day with two famous railway lines, yet still relaxed connections.
Plenty of connection time is built in at Myrdal, so there's no rushing with luggage.
At 1,222 metres, the highest station on Norway's rail network, set in the middle of the bare Hardangervidda plateau and often snow-covered as early as autumn. The Rallarvegen also starts from here. The train stops only briefly, so you'll experience the station both through the window and during the scheduled stop.
A connecting station high above the Flåm valley, where the Bergen Line meets the Flåm Railway. The connection is timed to your arrival, so you can change trains without any rush.

A tiny fjord village on the Aurlandsfjord, known for its small stave church and pungent goat's cheese. It's reachable by fjord bus or boat from Flåm and makes for a peaceful detour away from the crowds. A good spot for a cheese tasting and a stroll.
From Flåm via Myrdal to Bergen
The connection at Myrdal is timed with the Flåm Railway, so changing trains is relaxed.

The colourful timber houses of the old Hanseatic merchants define the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bryggen on Bergen's harbour front. The narrow lanes behind them reveal the medieval trading quarter, dotted with small workshops and shops. A lovely first wander after your arrival.

Fløyen, the fish market and the old town
A full day in Bergen on foot, with no train journey.
Bergen sees plenty of rain, so it's worth having a weatherproof plan with a museum as a backup.
The Fløibanen funicular whisks you up in just a few minutes to Bergen's local mountain, Fløyen, with sweeping views over the city, harbour and fjords. At the top, walking trails, viewpoints and a café invite you to linger. If you fancy it, you can wander back down on foot at a leisurely pace.
The fish market on the harbour is a lively meeting point with fresh fish, seafood and small food stalls, some housed in a covered hall. A good spot for a lunch break with regional specialities. Central and within walking distance of everything.
Waterfall and the Hardanger region
A longer day trip without your own luggage, which makes it manageable despite the travel time.
Without a car, a guided tour from Bergen is the most relaxed way to reach Vøringsfossen; bus connections are tightly timed.
One of Norway's best-known waterfalls plunges around 180 metres here into the narrow Måbødalen gorge at the edge of the Hardangervidda. New viewing platforms and a bridge offer spectacular views. An impressive natural highlight above the Hardangerfjord.
Final hours by the fjord
An open-ended finish in Bergen: from here, you'll begin your journey home by Bergen Line and train, or extend your stay independently.
For the journey home, reserve the Bergen Line to Oslo and the connection via Copenhagen early; breaking the return trip with an overnight stop makes it more relaxed.
The old fortress at the harbour entrance, with the Håkonshallen and the Rosenkrantztårnet, tells the story of Bergen's time as a medieval royal city. A peaceful final walk by the water before heading home. From here, you look out over the Byfjord.
