Journey stage via the Tauern
Set off early so you arrive before the afternoon and still have time to enjoy the lake.
Plan breaks for the dog every two hours, especially on the Tauern route.
This is where your journey begins. From Regensburg you head south via Munich and Salzburg - the first leg is deliberately split up so the caravan and the dog aren't overtaxed.
A peacefully situated lakeside campsite in Carinthia, ideal as a stopover before continuing on to Croatia. The warm Turnersee invites you in for your first swim, and the dog can stretch its legs along the shore after the drive. Short distances and plenty of greenery.

Arriving on the island
The Krk Bridge is the one potentially tricky spot: if there's a Bura warning, it's best to take a break and wait out the wind.
After setting up, spend the rest of the afternoon winding down at the campsite and by the sea.
A campsite right on the sea at the edge of Krk Town, with its own dog beach and shaded pitches beneath the pines. From here, all the island's destinations make easy day trips with the tow vehicle. You can walk into Krk's old town along the promenade in just a few minutes.

A mountain village above the sea
A relaxed day: Vrbnik in the morning, swimming in the afternoon.
Check the local dog rules at the beach; in Croatia there are often designated dog beaches, while other sections may have leash or dog bans in season.
A picturesque village perched on a cliff high above the sea, known for its white Žlahtina wine and for having what's claimed to be the narrowest street in the world. From the viewpoints, the view stretches across the Kvarner Bay to the mainland. Leave the caravan at the campsite and drive in with just the car - the village has designated car parks on its outskirts.
A quiet shingle cove north of Vrbnik with clear water, away from the crowds. A good spot for a swim and a break with the dog, as it's much less busy than the main beaches. Shade is limited, so bring sun protection.
Long beach and coastal views
Arrive early and even in May you'll get the best spots and a good parking space.
The dog beach section is at the eastern end of Vela plaža - dogs are welcome there.
A nearly two-kilometre-long shingle beach at the foot of bare mountains, one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic. The water is shallow and crystal clear, perfect for swimming. There's a designated dog beach at the eastern end, so the dog can join you in the water.
The small town behind the beach has winding lanes, a lovely waterfront promenade and plenty of cafés. A good spot for a shaded lunch break. Park the car in the designated car parks at the edge of town.
Ferry crossing and birds of prey
Check the ferry times beforehand and plan the return crossing so you're back on Krk by evening.
The island of Cres is quiet and lightly developed - great for nature, but fill up beforehand, as petrol stations are scarce.
The rescue and protection centre for Cres's rare griffon vultures is located in the charming mountain village of Beli, above the bay. You can see recovering birds up close and walk along short educational trails. A worthwhile stop to understand why the island's steep coastlines are so important for the birds of prey.
The island's main town clusters around a Venetian-influenced harbour with narrow lanes and waterside cafés. Perfect for a quiet stroll and a break before heading back to the ferry. You'll find parking around the edge of the harbour.
Moving to the mainland
Don't try to manoeuvre the trailer through Rijeka's city centre - approach Trsat Castle with the tow vehicle only.
A short driving stage, leaving plenty of time for setting up and a swim.
The medieval castle sits high above Rijeka, offering wide views over the Kvarner Bay and the Rječina Gorge. Right next door is the Trsat pilgrimage church. A good stop on the way to the mainland - park the car below, whether you've already reached your new pitch with the caravan or plan to head there afterwards.
A small, family-run campsite right on the sea in the Preluk bay between Rijeka and Opatija. From here you can easily reach the Lungomare, Učka Nature Park and Trsat by car. Direct access to a shingle beach where dogs are welcome.

Coastal promenade and mountain forest
Walk along the cooler Lungomare in the morning, then head into the shady forests of Učka in the afternoon.
Bring plenty of water for the dog on the walk, as there are few springs up in the hills.
The twelve-kilometre-long coastal promenade winds from Volosko via Opatija to Lovran, always right along the water. Perfect for a long walk with the dog, past villas, coves and bathing spots. You don't need to walk the whole route - just pick a nice stretch.

The forested ridge above Opatija offers hiking trails through beech woods, and from the viewing tower on Vojak (1401 m) a panoramic view over the Kvarner Bay all the way to Italy. Several routes of varying length start from the Poklon car park, well suited to walking with a dog on a lead. Drive the narrow mountain road without the trailer.
A nature stop on the way home
The return leg on the final day is the longest stretch of the trip - set off early and take deliberate breaks.
If you'd rather take it easy on the way home, you can break up the journey with an extra overnight stop in Carinthia or Styria.
Long stage - plan for breaks.
A green, wildly romantic gorge with a well-built wooden boardwalk trail running alongside the clear mountain stream. The flat circular route (around one to one and a half hours) is an ideal leg-stretching break on the way home, and easy to manage with the dog on a lead. The car park is right at the start, on the old road - the caravan can stop here briefly.
Back at your starting point, your round trip comes to an end. With sea air still in your lungs and the dog relaxed on the back seat, you arrive back in Regensburg.
