Water and relaxation

The shallow waters of Steinhuder Meer are perfect for splashing about and first attempts at swimming. There are play areas and boat hire along the shore. Leave the caravan at the campsite and just take the car.
An artificial island fortress in the middle of the lake, reachable by excursion boat. For children, the boat trip is a small adventure, and the old walls invite exploration.
Closer to the sea
The longest drive so far, but still within the 4-hour limit.
With an afternoon arrival, you'll still have time to set up.
A coastal site on the Jadebusen, where the children experience real mudflats for the first time. Dangast is a small seaside resort with a beach, a seawater outdoor pool and wide views over the North Sea. A good stopover to get a feel for the tides.

First mudflat adventure
No change of location, a relaxed day with mudflats and swimming.
On a guided mudflat walk, the children get to know lugworms, crabs and shellfish. The guide explains reliably when the tide comes in and out, which builds confidence for Amrum later on. Bring wellies or old shoes.

Ready for the island
Tönning is deliberately close to the ferry, so tomorrow's crossing is a short one.
Use the afternoon to explore Tönning harbour.
A quiet site at the mouth of the Eider, close to the ferry route towards Amrum. Tönning has a charming harbour to stroll around and lies on the edge of the Wadden Sea National Park. A good base for setting off rested to the ferry the next morning.

The big crossing
Today is the most exciting day: the ferry with the caravan in tow. Stay calm, the staff will guide you.
There are partial driving restrictions in some areas of the island, so check at the site.
From here, the W.D.R. ferry takes you and your entire rig to Amrum. Important: book the vehicle with caravan and oversized length online in advance and state the total length correctly. Be at the terminal at least 45-60 minutes before departure, follow the instructions, and pay attention to the loading ramp before driving on. You drive the rig straight onto the deck, which is easily manageable and guided by the staff.

The large campsite on Amrum lies among the dunes at the southern end of Kniepsand, one of the widest sandy beaches in Europe. From here, the beach and mudflats are just a few minutes' walk away. An ideal base for the coming days - you'll leave the caravan here for the rest of the trip.

Beach day on Amrum
A pure beach day to settle in, no car needed.
Kniepsand is a huge expanse of sand off the west coast of Amrum, wide enough for every family to find their own spot. Perfect for sandcastles, kite flying and long beach walks. A paradise for the children to run wild.
A beach chair provides shelter from the wind and shade for a relaxed day at the beach. Bookable through the tourist office right at the beach access point.
Discovering the mudflats
Plan the mudflat walk according to the tide calendar, as the timing depends on low tide.
With an experienced mudflat guide, you head out onto the seabed when the water has retreated. The children find cockles, watch lugworms and learn why the Wadden Sea is a World Heritage Site. A safe guided tour with an eye on the tides.
A small exhibition with aquariums and finds from the mudflats. After the walk, you can see here which creatures live in the sea. Good for an afternoon when the wind is too strong.
Exploring the island
The lighthouse can be reached on foot or by bike from the site, so you can leave the car behind.
The distinctive red-and-white lighthouse is the landmark of Amrum. Those who climb the steps are rewarded with a sweeping view over the island, Kniepsand and the sea. A great destination for children, right in the middle of the heathland.
A walking trail leads through the largest dune landscape of the North Sea islands and the island's small woodland. Between heath and sand there's plenty to discover, and the paths are flat enough for the children. Sturdy shoes are enough.
Island villages and beach
For the island villages, just take the car, or alternatively catch the island bus.
Much of Amrum can also be explored well by bicycle.
The idyllic Frisian village of Nebel, with thatched houses and the old St Clemens Church, invites you to stroll around. In the historic cemetery, the gravestones tell stories of seafarers. A nice change of pace from the beach.
The quieter north of the island, with a wide sandy beach and shallow water. Less hustle and bustle than Wittdün, ideal for a relaxed beach afternoon with shell hunting.

A relaxed final day, with no driving at all.

One final, leisurely day on the wide Kniepsand. Swimming, building sandcastles and sorting through the shells you've collected. Enjoy the wide open space before heading back to the mainland tomorrow.
At Wittdün Harbour you can enjoy a fish roll and watch the boats. Your ferry departs from here tomorrow, so take a relaxed look around in advance.
Farewell and final stage
A deliberately short mainland stage, so the last day ends relaxed.
From Husum, it's about 3 hours back to Hannover the following day, good for the journey home.
Return crossing with the caravan from Wittdün to Dagebüll. Be at the terminal in good time - by now, driving on with the caravan is routine for you. Remember the pre-booked crossing with oversized length.

For a relaxed finish, one night on the mainland near Husum, right by the dyke. From here, you set off rested the next day on the journey home to Hannover. The children can visit the beach once more and take a look at the shrimp boats in the harbour.
