Arriving on the coast

The stop in Hvide Sande breaks up the drive nicely for the kids.
A small fishing village on the spit between the North Sea and the fjord, with a lock, fish stalls and views of the trawlers. A lovely stop to stretch your legs and let the kids watch the boats.
A family site on the edge of Ringkøbing with a playground and generous grassy areas, a good base for several days by the fjord. From here, the beach, the fjord and various outings are all easily reached.

Sand, wind and water
A pure rest day with no change of location.
Pack a windbreaker and spare clothes – the North Sea is bracing even in autumn.
A wide, gently sloping sandy beach with plenty of room for sandcastles and kites – you can even drive your car onto the beach here. Ideal for a long, relaxed day with young children.
Indoors when it's wet and windy
A flexible bad-weather day – if it's sunny, simply add on another beach visit.
A small maritime and fishery museum in Hvide Sande with aquariums, touch pools and an exhibition all about the North Sea. Great for a rainy day when the kids want a close-up look at crabs and fish.
A cosy little town on the fjord with cobbled streets, small shops and cafés. A stroll to warm up and enjoy a slice of cake, if the weather allows.
A new base in the south
A short moving day with a worthwhile stop along the way.

A museum built into the dunes inside an old bunker, with exhibitions on amber, coastal history and the Atlantic Wall. Kids find the architecture and the amber exhibition fascinating too, and it works in any weather.

Climb up high and take in the view
A relaxed day around Blåvand with no long drives.
The lighthouse is sometimes closed in strong winds – check opening times beforehand.
Denmark's westernmost lighthouse, which you can climb via a spiral staircase – from the top, there are sweeping views over the dunes, the sea and the sand-covered bunkers on the beach. A little adventure for the kids, with a reward at the top.
A mile after mile of flat sandy beach with the famous concrete bunkers, now styled as sculptures. Plenty of room to run about, hunt for shells and look for amber after a storm.
Animals for any weather
The zoo also makes an ideal fallback destination if one of your beach days gets rained off.
A compact zoo near Blåvand with monkeys, meerkats, kangaroos and a petting area – manageable enough for young children, with covered areas for rainy days. Ideal for when the weather doesn't invite a trip to the beach.

Nature at the Wadden Sea
Check seal feeding times in advance so you don't miss them.
The four large white figures on the beach at Esbjerg gaze out to sea and make a popular photo spot. A short, breezy walk that young children enjoy too.
A museum with a seawater aquarium and an outdoor seal enclosure, fed daily. There's a nature playground outside, and indoors is a great way to fill a rainy day.
Halfway back
Short stages with a cultural break in Ribe.
The last night close to the border shortens tomorrow's journey home.
Denmark's oldest town, with narrow lanes, storks on the rooftops and an atmospheric cathedral. A lovely stop on the way back for a stroll and a break; park your combination on the edge of town.

The final stage is deliberately kept under three hours, so the homeward journey isn't a strain.
