The Viking royal site at Jelling, with its rune stones and burial mounds, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a great spot to stretch your legs on the drive. The Kongernes Jelling experience centre explains the history in an engaging way and is free to enter.
A peaceful nature campsite in a wooded setting near Jelling, ideal for your first overnight stop after the drive up. The facilities are in good condition, there's plenty of space, and it makes a great starting point for the onward journey to Hirtshals the next day.

Crossing the Skagerrak

A small harbour town at the northern tip of Jutland and the departure point for ferries to Norway. If you're early, you could visit the Nordsøen Oceanarium, one of the largest aquariums in northern Europe.

Arriving and enjoying the sea
A quiet settling-in day with no change of location.

Norway's most popular animal and amusement park, with native and exotic animals, swimming spots and the fairytale village Kardemomme By. A relaxed day to arrive, with no long drive at all.

The historic old town of Kristiansand, with its low white timber houses, is lovely for a stroll. It's best to park the motorhome on the edge of town or at the campsite and walk the last stretch.
First fjord in sight
The stage has deliberately been split with a stop along the way, keeping driving time under five hours.
This small coastal town, with its Dutch-influenced Hollenderbyen quarter, makes a charming stop on the way west. A good chance for a coffee break and a short walk by the water.
A family-run campsite right at the entrance to Lysefjord, with water views and a peaceful setting. An ideal base for the hike to Preikestolen and for boat trips into the fjord.

The famous rock ledge
Set off early to avoid the crowds and the afternoon heat.
Check the weather: the path gets slippery in fog or wet conditions.
With its sheer 604-metre drop above Lysefjord, Preikestolen is one of Norway's most famous hikes. The round trip takes around four to five hours, is steep in places, but manageable with decent footwear. At the top you're rewarded with a spectacular view over the fjord.
Waterfalls and fjord walls
A relaxed day with a short drive and plenty of water.
Alternatively, there's time for a swim or a quiet afternoon at the site.
A fjord cruise brings you close to the steep rock walls, Preikestolen from below, and the Hengjanefossen waterfall. From the water, the scale of Lysefjord feels even more impressive.

Coastal city and onward journey
A stage with ferries, total driving time including crossings under five hours.
Gamle Stavanger is the best-preserved wooden house settlement in northern Europe, a maze of white houses and cobbled streets. It's best to park the motorhome on the edge, as the centre is easily reached on foot.
A quietly situated campsite by the sea with views over the skerries and good facilities. A fitting stop on the way to Hardangerfjord, with swimming right at the water's edge.

Into the second fjord
Allow enough time for photo stops along Hardangerfjord.
The small baroque Baroniet Rosendal, with its historic rose garden, sits picturesquely between fjord and mountains. The park is free to enter, and the manor house can be visited on a guided tour.

Glacier and mountain lake
A short, family-friendly hike with plenty of nature to take in.
Pack sturdy shoes and a rain jacket, as the weather changes quickly near the glacier.
From the hamlet of Sundal, an easy hike of around an hour leads to the turquoise-green Bondhusvatnet, behind which a tongue of the Folgefonna glacier hangs. The wide path is manageable even without mountain experience and opens onto one of the finest fjord backdrops in the region.
Waterfalls of the Hardanger
The Trolltunga hike is very demanding at over 20 km; if you're planning it, allow a full day and make sure you're in good shape.
Låtefossen plunges down in two powerful streams right next to the road, spanned by an old stone bridge. A short but striking stop, where the spray reaches right onto the road.
A centrally located campsite by Sandvinvatnet near Odda, surrounded by mountains with water views. A good base for the area around Sørfjord and the famous Trolltunga hike.

Swimming and shorter walks
A deliberately quiet day after the eventful fjord days.
The final steep section to Buarbreen is optional and can be skipped.
A round hike of a good two hours leads from the Buar car park to the Buarbreen glacier tongue of Folgefonna. The path through forest and over rocks is varied and ends close to the shimmering blue ice.
Cherries, waterfalls and fjord views
Allow time for a stop at one of the farm shops selling cherries and apple juice.
You can walk behind the water curtain at Steinsdalsfossen without getting wet. A short but rewarding stop near Norheimsund, right in the heart of Hardanger's fruit-growing region.
A small site right on Hardangerfjord with water views and a peaceful setting amid the orchards. From here you'll head off relaxed the next day towards the coast and the ferry home.

Farewell to fjord country
A longer stage, so it's split into two sections with a break.
If you'd like to shorten the drive, you could add an overnight stop and adjust Day 14.

On the long drive back to the coast, it's worth stopping in one of the small fjord towns for a break by the water. Use the chance for a final look at the fjord landscape of southern Norway before heading towards Kristiansand.

Home across the Skagerrak
A deliberately short drive after the crossing, to end the day peacefully.
After the crossing you're back on Danish soil. From Hirtshals you head south, and a modest stage is enough for today.
A large campsite on the North Sea coast between dunes and woodland, with direct beach access. Ideal for arriving after the ferry crossing and winding down the evening on the wide sandy beach.

Final stage in Denmark
Driving time just under the limit, with breaks along the way.
Ribe is considered Denmark's oldest town, with narrow cobbled lanes and an impressive cathedral. Park the motorhome on the edge of town and explore the old town on foot at a leisurely pace.
A family-friendly campsite on the edge of the historic town of Ribe, well equipped and peacefully located. From here it's just a manageable stretch back to Hamburg on the final day.

Arriving home
A relaxed final day with a manageable stage.
Back in Hamburg, your Norway road trip comes to an end. Via the German-Danish border and the A7, you'll be home again by early afternoon.
