Arrival with a stopover
A deliberately short first leg, so the arrival day stays relaxed.
This is where your journey begins. You'll drive with the caravan and 100 km/h sticker heading south on the A8 into the Alps.
Family-friendly campsite in the Chiemgau with mountain views, a good stopover after around four hours of driving. There's a bathing pond and plenty of space for the kids to let off steam. Ideal for splitting the journey into two stages.

Stage into the Oberpinzgau
The Gerlospass involves a bit of climbing with a caravan, but is noticeably more moderate than the Grossglockner.
A quiet mountain campsite near the Krimmler Wasserfälle, perfect as a base for your waterfall day. From here you can reach the start of the waterfall trail easily on foot or with a short drive. Crisp mountain air and views of the Hohe Tauern.

Nature & hiking
A full day at the waterfall — bring sturdy footwear and a rain jacket for the spray.
With a drop of 380 metres, the Krimmler Wasserfälle are among the highest in Europe. The well-maintained waterfall trail winds up in switchbacks past several viewing platforms to the upper tier, with the spray providing welcome cooling. An impressive natural experience for kids too, with plenty of rest stops along the way.
Base camp for the pass
Deliberately NOT towing over the Grossglockner: the Felbertauernstrasse is the caravan-friendly bypass.
The caravan now stays put in Heiligenblut for two nights.
Campsite right at the southern foot of the Grossglockner Hochalpenstrasse, with views of the pilgrimage church and the mountains. The ideal base to park the caravan and drive the pass the next day without the trailer. Indoor pool and well-kept sanitary facilities in the village.

Alpine pass & panorama
Without the trailer, the pass is a completely relaxed drive in the car.
Allow enough time for the return, back to the campsite in Heiligenblut in the evening.
The viewing platform at 2,369 metres looks straight out onto the Grossglockner and the Pasterze, Austria's largest glacier. There's a visitor centre, marmots to spot, and often ibex on the slopes. A highlight you can reach in a relaxed way with just the tow vehicle.
At 2,571 metres, the highest drivable point on the panoramic road, reached via a short, steep side turn. From the viewing platform, on clear days you can see over 30 peaks above 3,000 metres. The narrow ascent is only recommended without a trailer.
Swimming & relaxation
After the pass day, a deliberately quiet moving day with a swimming afternoon.
A terraced campsite with its own lake access on the warmest of Carinthia's large lakes, ideal for swimming and relaxed afternoons by the water. Direct access into the lake and sunbathing lawns with mountain views. A good base for two nights by the lake.

Car-free lakeshore
No cars on the south shore: use a bike, walking boots, or the excursion boat.
The Weissensee is the highest bathing lake in the Alps, with drinking-water quality, and its south shore is car-free, reachable only on foot, by bike or by boat. Clear turquoise water, shady coves and a lakeside path make it a natural gem. Perfect for a peaceful day of swimming and walking.
Lake & views
Arrival in the morning, tower in the afternoon, then into the water.
The world's tallest wooden observation tower offers panoramic views over the Wörthersee and the Karawanken mountains. Head up by lift, and come down either the same way or via the longest alpine slide — a real highlight for the kids. A spectacular viewpoint right on your arrival day at the Wörthersee.
Campsite with direct access to the warm Wörthersee on the quieter south shore. Its own bathing beach, sunbathing lawn and gently sloping entry for the kids. A good base for exploring the Wörthersee and Faaker See.

Beach day
A pure day of relaxation by the water, a good contrast after the mountain days.
The Inselbad lies on Carinthia's only island, right in the middle of the emerald-green Faaker See, reached via a footbridge. Turquoise water, sunbathing lawns and views of the Mittagskogel make this a memorable beach day. A calm contrast to the busier Wörthersee.
Homeward with a stopover
Split the journey home into two legs, so driving time stays within the daily limit.
An award-winning campsite on the Saalach with mountain panoramas, set in a quiet, family-friendly location. A good stopover on the way back, with a riverside bathing spot and lots of greenery. High-standard sanitary facilities.

Return to the starting point
The final leg, around three and a half hours, in keeping with the daily limit.
Back at the starting point, your round trip comes to an end. From Lofer via the A8 and A9, you'll be home again in a manageable driving time.
