From Dresden to the island

Your journey starts here. With bike and luggage, you'll head towards the Baltic Sea by train.
From the ferry port of Sassnitz on Rügen, the fast ferry departs for Rønne. The crossing takes a good three and a half hours across the open Baltic Sea.

Castle ruins and north coast
A moderate first day of cycling with around 36 km and a bit of climbing towards Hammershus.
Take your time at the ruins, ideally in the late morning.
The largest castle ruin in Northern Europe stands on a cliff above the Baltic Sea. A modern visitor centre explains its history, and from the ramparts you get sweeping views of the coast. The climb is worth it for the view alone.

Cliffs and smokehouse
Around 24 km with plenty of nature stops, a relaxed day with time by the coast.
Plan the smokehouse for midday, so there's time left for Gudhjem.
The Hammeren headland at the northern tip offers Bornholm's wildest rocky coastline, with its small lighthouse and the Opal Lake. Walking trails lead over smooth granite rocks with wide views across the Baltic Sea.
The impressive cliff formations between Allinge and Gudhjem drop steeply into the sea. A coastal path and the nearby Bornholm Art Museum make the stop worthwhile. Seen from the water, the rock towers look especially spectacular.
The long-established smokehouse in Gudhjem is famous for Bornholm's smoked herring, served as Sol over Gudhjem. Typical alder-wood smoke drifts over the chimneys. A must for anyone wanting to try the island's cuisine.

Round church and tiny island
A rest day from all the cycling: just a short loop to the round church, then a boat trip.
Check ferry times to Christiansø in advance, as it can get busy in high season.
The largest and oldest of Bornholm's round churches, dating from the 12th century, looks almost like a fortress church with its thick walls. Inside, a massive central pillar and lime-washed paintings tell its history. A short detour inland is well worth it.
The tiny fortified island of Ertholmene lies off the east coast and is car-free. Historic ramparts, towers and a picturesque harbour make this trip special. Bicycles stay on the mainland, and you explore the island on foot.
East coast and craftsmanship
Around 37 km along the varied east coast.
Allow time for crafts in Svaneke and Nexø.
The striking Duckdalben water tower shapes the look of the artists' town of Svaneke, often considered Denmark's prettiest small town. Around the harbour you'll find glassblowers, sweet makers and small workshops lined up. A good place for a longer stop.
Numerous ceramic, glass and craft workshops are found in and around Nexø, many with open studios. You can watch potting and glassblowing and buy Bornholm crafts directly. The harbour town itself has an eventful fishing history.

Beach, forest and the way back
The longest day of cycling at around 56 km, but mostly flat and shaded.
Start early to enjoy the beach and forest at a relaxed pace.
The fine, almost white sandy beach at Dueodde on the southern tip is among the finest on the Baltic Sea. From the lighthouse, the view stretches far across dunes and pine forest. A good spot to dip your feet in the water for a while.
Almindingen, Bornholm's largest forest, offers peaceful cycle paths, the Kongemindet lookout tower and Rytterknægten, the island's highest point. Rock clefts such as Ekkodalen and quiet lakes invite you to linger. A shaded contrast to the open coast.
A last night back in Rønne, close to the ferry port for departure the next morning. After dinner there's still time for a stroll through the old town.

The way home
After the ferry in Sassnitz, take the connecting train towards Berlin and Dresden.
Reserve bicycle spaces again for the train journey, and secure discounted fares early.
From the harbour of Rønne, the ferry takes you back to Sassnitz on Rügen. One last look at the island before heading to the mainland.
