Setting off on Lake Constance
A short first day to get used to the loaded bike.
The climb up to Scheidegg is the first real gradient of the tour - take it easy.
This is where your journey begins. Before setting off, take a look at Lindau's harbour with its lion and lighthouse, then roll off from the official starting point of the Bodensee-Königssee-Radweg.
Lindau's landmark: the Bavarian lion and the historic lighthouse flank the harbour entrance. A good spot for a starting photo and a last look across the lake to the Alps.
The health resort of Scheidegg sits scenically on a ridge in the western Allgäu. From here the view stretches across Lake Constance all the way to the Säntis in Switzerland. Your reward for the first climb is an Alpine panorama.
A quietly situated campsite in the western Allgäu with views of the Alps and a simple grassy pitch for tents. Good sanitary facilities and a relaxed start to the pre-Alpine region. Cyclists are welcome here.
Hills and lakes
About 34 km, but undulating - the climbs make the day.
Allow enough time for a swim in the Alpsee.
A well-known health resort in the Allgäu, nestled among green hills. A lovely spot for a coffee break and a cheese sandwich before continuing towards the Alpine lakes.
The largest natural lake in the Allgäu, ringed by mountains and perfect for a swimming break. The water is often pleasantly warm by June, and the shoreline paths are flat and peaceful.
A family-friendly campsite right on the Großer Alpsee with direct lake access. Perfect for an evening dip and a view of the surrounding mountains. Tent pitches on the grass.
Roman town and the Iller
About 56 km - one of the longer stages, but without any big passes.
Cambodunum fits well with your interest in castles and history.
One of the oldest towns in Germany, with Roman roots. In the old town, the Residenz and the views over the Iller are well worth a look. A good stop for history and a chance to stock up on supplies.
On the site of Cambodunum, the former Roman provincial capital, you can explore reconstructed temples and baths. A tangible glimpse into Roman times, right along the route.
A quietly located campsite on the small Elbsee with a natural swimming spot. Ideal for winding down after cycling, with a grassy pitch and lake views. A good base at the transition into the eastern Allgäu.
Castles and pre-Alpine lakes
About 48 km plus the detour to the castles.
The royal castles are a highlight - it's worth setting off early to avoid the biggest crowds.
Located at the southern end of the Romantische Straße, with a pretty old town and the Hohes Schloss. From here the royal castles are almost within sight, and you're right at the foot of the Alps.

Ludwig's famous fairy-tale castle towers above the Alpsee. Without a long wait, it's worth admiring it from below or from the Marienbrücke; an interior visit is possible with timed tickets but takes time and involves a climb. The Alpsee also offers a chance for a swim.

A campsite on the Hopfensee with mountain panoramas and lake access. The lake is considered one of the warmer bodies of water in the region and invites an evening swim. Very cyclist-friendly, just before continuing into the Pfaffenwinkel.
Moorland, monasteries and the Isar
At about 64 km, the longest stage - but without any real passes.
If needed, the Füssen-Bad Tölz stretch can also be split; there are further campsites along the way.
Long cycling stage (107 km) — split it up or plan for plenty of breaks.
The pilgrimage church of the Scourged Saviour is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a highlight of Bavarian Rococo. Its bright interior amid green meadows is worth a stop and costs no admission.
A spa town on the Isar with painted townhouses along the Marktstraße. A good place for an evening stroll and an ice cream by the river, surrounded by the first pre-Alpine peaks.
A simple, nature-close campsite south of Bad Tölz in the Isarwinkel. A peaceful grassy pitch on the edge of the pre-Alps, and a good starting point for the route towards Tegernsee. Cyclists are well catered for here.
Bavarian lakes
About 72 km with a few climbs between the lakes - the most demanding stage.
If you'd prefer something calmer, the Schliersee-Chiemsee stretch can partly be shortened by train (bikes can be taken along).
Long cycling stage (89 km) — split it up or plan for plenty of breaks.
A clear mountain lake with an Alpine backdrop and the former monastery on its shore. A lovely spot for a swimming break and a view of the surrounding peaks. The lakeside promenade is flat and pleasant to cycle.
The quieter neighbour of Tegernsee, also ringed by mountains. A good opportunity for a second swim before continuing towards Chiemgau.
A family-friendly campsite near Prien am Chiemsee with a grassy pitch for tents. From the 'Bavarian Sea' it's worth taking a boat trip to Herreninsel with Schloss Herrenchiemsee. A good stop before the final stage.
Reaching the destination
About 66 km with the most elevation gain of the tour - the final climb to the Königssee is demanding.
For the journey home: from Berchtesgaden, the train (with bike transport, reservation recommended) will take you back towards home.
Long cycling stage (85 km) — split it up or plan for plenty of breaks.
A traditional salt-mining town at the foot of the Berchtesgadener Alpen. A good spot for a final rest before the cycle path turns onto the last climb towards the Königssee.
The emerald-green destination of your tour, nestled between steep rock faces. A quiet electric boat takes you to the famous pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomä. A fitting finale to the Bodensee-Königssee-Radweg.
A campsite with mountain panoramas near the Königssee and the Watzmann. The ideal place to finish after the final climb, with a grassy pitch and views of the peaks. The lakeshore is within easy reach from here.
