Water, mountains and the echo wall
You can easily spend half a day to a full day at Königssee. If you like, take the boat further to Salet and walk to Obersee.
Bring sturdy shoes for the lakeside paths, as it often clouds over in the afternoon.
The quiet electric boats of the Bayerische Seenschifffahrt set off from the shore of Königssee. During the crossing, the boat captain plays his flugelhorn towards the famous echo wall, whose sound is thrown back several times by the rock faces.
The small pilgrimage church, with its red onion domes, sits picturesquely on a peninsula at the foot of the Watzmann's eastern face. Lakeside paths around the church invite easy strolls, and the rustic inn serves fresh fish straight from the lake.
Summit views by cable car and wild water
It's cool and windy up on the Jenner even in summer, so pack a jacket.
The Wimbachklamm is an easy walk; if you have more time, continue on to Wimbachschloss.
The modern gondola lift takes you comfortably up to the mountain station at around 1800 metres. From the viewing platform, the view stretches over Königssee to the Watzmann, and a short, well-maintained path leads to the actual summit.

Wooden walkways and tunnels lead the way through the narrow gorge, where the water thunders over the rocks. A short, family-friendly circuit that combines well with a walk through the Wimbachtal.
Eagle's nest and history
Book a bus slot for the Kehlsteinhaus early, as time windows are limited.
You can swap the order: if the weather's uncertain, visit the Dokumentation first, then head up to Kehlstein once it clears.
The documentation centre, at a historic site, explains the history of the Obersalzberg as the second seat of government of the Nazi regime and places it within the broader history of National Socialism. Part of the former bunker system can be walked through, making the past strikingly tangible.
High above the Obersalzberg, the Kehlsteinhaus sits at 1834 metres. The journey there is an experience in itself: a special bus travels along the bold mountain road, then a historic brass lift carries you up through the rock. Your reward is a sweeping panoramic view over the Alps.

Postcard idyll as a farewell
The Zauberwald circular walk is easy and takes one to two hours, depending on your pace.
In the morning, leave your luggage at the hotel and head out on the excursion; for your journey home by train, allow enough buffer time for changes in Munich.
The parish church of St. Sebastian, with the Ache river and mountains in the background, is considered one of the most photographed sights in Germany. The small mountaineering village is a good starting point for easy walks along the river.
On calm days, the quiet mountain lake reflects the surrounding peaks and once inspired landscape painters. From the shore, the Zauberwald, an enchanting path over moss-covered boulders, leads back towards the village alongside the Ramsauer Ache.
The end point of your journey. From the historic station, a regional train takes you back towards Freilassing and onward north again.
