Travelling via Basel and Interlaken

This is where your trip begins. From Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof, you head straight towards Switzerland on the long-distance network.
Your fixed base for the whole week: a family-friendly holiday flat in Grindelwald, an easy walk from the station and with a view of the Eiger's north face. From here you set off each day on a different tour, without ever needing to move. A kitchen and laundry facilities make travelling with children easy.

First panoramic day above Grindelwald
Deliberately keep the first day of hiking short to get used to the altitude.
Pack sun protection and sturdy shoes for the children.
The cable car takes you up to First, the starting point for many hikes with sweeping views of the Bernese Alps. Bachalpsee is a short, family-friendly destination where the peaks are reflected in the water. Up top there's also the Cliff Walk, running right along the rock face.
A crystal-clear mountain lake around an hour's walk from First, with a spectacular reflection of the Schreckhorn and Finsteraarhorn. The wide path is also manageable for children. An ideal spot for a long picnic break.
Car-free mountain village and viewpoints
The high-level trail from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg is easy and well worth it; return to Grindelwald by train.
Make sure younger children have enough drink breaks.
You can only reach the car-free mountain village of Wengen by train, which makes it especially peaceful. From here you have a wonderful view over the Lauterbrunnen valley towards the Jungfrau. A great starting point for relaxed high-level trails.
The cable car takes you from Wengen up to Männlichen, one of the region's finest viewpoints. The child-friendly Royal Way leads gently towards Kleine Scheidegg with views of the Eiger's north face. Up top there's a playground for a break.
A highlight by cogwheel railway
A full-day excursion, so start early and plan for the whole day.
Move slowly because of the altitude and drink plenty of water; descend earlier if you feel unwell.
The railway hub at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, where the cogwheel railways converge. From here the journey continues up to the Jungfraujoch. A good place for a short stop and photos in front of the famous north face.
The highest railway station in Europe at 3454 metres, with an ice palace, viewing platform and snow all year round. For the children, snow in summer is quite an experience, and the view over the Aletsch Glacier is a treat for everyone. Bring warm clothing, as it's cool up top.

Water and relaxation
A deliberately relaxed day after the long Jungfraujoch excursion.
Decide flexibly between swimming and a short walk, depending on the weather.
A deliberately quiet day around Grindelwald, with a short walk through the valley and time at the playground. If you fancy swimming, take the train to the nearby outdoor pool or a lake. The day is meant for recovery between the mountain tours.
The sports centre in the village has an indoor pool and an adventure area, ideal for a relaxed afternoon or when the weather turns. For the children, it's a welcome change of pace from hiking. Just a short walk from the holiday flat.
Car-free high valley above Lauterbrunnen
The easy high-level trail from Mürren to Grütschalp is family-friendly and full of views.
Keep an eye on the last trains back.
The valley of 72 waterfalls, home to the famous Staubbach Falls, which plunge freely from the rock face. A short stop here is worthwhile before continuing up by mountain railway. For children, the roaring waterfall is quite impressive.

The car-free mountain village of Mürren sits on a sun terrace high above the Lauterbrunnen valley. Easy high-level trails lead from here with direct views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The village is peaceful and perfectly suited to a relaxed day of walking.
Water, rock and a toboggan run
The combination of gorge and toboggan run is ideal for children.
Your last full day, so leave time for souvenirs and a relaxed dinner in the village.
A spectacular walkway leads through the narrow gorge with roaring glacial water and smooth rock walls. For children, it's a small adventure with safe paths and tunnels. A cool, shady spot even on hot days.
The small cable car takes you up to Pfingstegg with views of the Wetterhorn and the glacier. Up top there's a summer toboggan run and a playground, which are a real highlight for the children. A relaxed final mountain day before departure.
Heading home by panoramic train
A pure travel day, so pack in the morning at a relaxed pace and head to the station in good time.
Pack some food for the train journey, especially for the children.
From Grindelwald Railway Station, the relaxed return journey takes you via Interlaken and Basel to Frankfurt. Once more you travel through the green valley with views of the peaks. A fitting end to your car-free mountain week.
